Nickname of Robert MacGregor (1671-1734) Scottish Highland Jacobite outlaw. After losing his estates, he lived by cattle theft and extortion. Captured, he was sentenced to transportation but pardoned 1727. He is a central character in Walter Scott’s historical novel Rob Roy 1817.
